Second Rehearsal 2024
Ullswater Community College
Saturday 16th November 2024
From over 100 members, 89 singers attended the second choir rehearsal on 16th November.
Having rehearsed in depth, Chilcott’s ‘Requiem’ at the previous rehearsal in September, Matthew Owens introduced the two other works that will be sung in the concert on April 26th : ‘Five Mystical Songs’ by Vaughan Williams and John Rutter’s ‘Gloria’ .
Matthew reminded the choir about the correct way to pronounce the text, which was similar to the requirements of Chilcott’s ‘Requiem’.
In future rehearsals and in the online rehearsal sessions it will now be possible to focus on particular movements across all three pieces so that they will soon become familiar to us.
In their feedback about this rehearsal, singers commented that they particularly appreciated:

During the AGM, Margaret Riches read her report which updated the choir on the achievements of the previous season. The Treasurer reminded singers of the need to continue to fund raise to ensure the choir’s future. Members were thanked for their support for all the fund raising initiatives which took place during 2023-4. Particular thanks was given to Tim Hirst for the amazing achievement of walking the equivalent of ‘US Route 66’, through his daily walks with his dog around Cumbria (in rain or shine), which he embarked on shortly after the last concert in April. Since their completion of this ‘iconic journey between Chicago and Los Angeles of 2,448 miles/3,940 km’, £600 has been raised through sponsorship.
Choir members were urged to consider ways in which they could also raise funds for the choir through activities in their local communities. It was emphasised that even if they are less ambitious than Tim’s project, every little helps!
It was also reported that the preparation of the programme notes for the concert had begun. Singers were encouraged to approach companies / organisations in their local areas for adverts. Although the advertising rates are very reasonable, overall the revenue raised makes a significant contribution towards the printing costs of the programmes and the flyers.
